EU accuses Facebook and Twitter of failing to remove hate speech 

The European Commission has said it will force technology giants to be tough on hate speech if they don’t adopt their own strict measures to tackle the phenomenon.

It warned that companies including Facebook, Google, Twitter and Microsoft – which voluntarily signed an anti-hate speech code of conduct earlier this year – were still not doing enough to quell illegal abuse on their platforms.

By signing up to the code the companies agreed to act on hateful posts sent within 24 hours of them being published in Europe, after concerns that the refugee crisis and terror attacks would trigger a wave of illegal hate speech online.
