Google Fiber to Expand Broadband Coverage via Webpass Acquisition

Google Fiber announced yesterday that it is set to acquire high-speed fiber Internet service provider, Webpass that already serves five US cities. The acquisition, pending regulatory approvals, indicates that Alphabet Inc.’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) broadband-based “other bet” is looking to expand its area of operations and take on major national Internet service providers (ISPs).

The financial terms of the takeover have not been disclosed yet. San Francisco-based Webpass was established as a private entity in 2003, and claims to host a customer base of “tens of thousands.”
